Oval Ceramic Sharpening Rods

2009 May 11

ceramicrodA ceramic rod can be used to both realign and sharpen the knife edge. It can be used in the same manner as a steel rod for realigning the edge, but, due to its fine abrasive surface, it can also remove a small amount of steel to actually sharpen the edge. A ceramic rod is best for keeping a relatively sharp edge sharp, when used each time a knife is used. Due to its relatively fine abrasive surface, it will take a long time to get a relatively dull knife sharp using a ceramic rod. The advantage of an oval ceramic rod vs. a round rod is the added surface area available on the oval rod, which increases the speed of the sharpening.
