Sharpening Serrated Edge Knives- Knife Sharpening Options
Question via “Ask the Expert”
I’ve had a set of Henckels “Ever Sharp” with small serrated edges for several years and they need to be sharpened. They don’t cut anywhere near as good as they did when they were new.
What can I do to sharpen these knives, if anything.
Thanks.
Edge Expert Response:
The proper way to sharpen serrations is to use a tapered round or triangular shaped abrasive rod or stones. These unique shapes allow you to sharpen the whole cutting edge of the serration as well as the tips while giving you the most consistent results and avoiding damage to your serrations. Also, some serrated blades may only be ground on one side of the blade. If this is the case, only sharpen the side of the blade with the serrations.
As for some of our products in the Edgeware™ line that would MANUALLY sharpen serrated knives, see the list below:
50034 – Straight & Serrated Edge Pull Thru Sharpener -This would be our recommendation- it’s easy and great for serrated kitchen knives
50004 – Counter Safe™ Deluxe Knife & Scissors Sharpener- sharpens serrated knives in ceramic (FINE) sharpening slot only
Electric Sharpener - 50006 – Diamond Edge Gourmet™ - in manual finishing/honing slot only.
We also have a couple Edgesport™ products that are very effective at sharpening serrated knives, but use more
aggressive abrasive materials to get the job done.
Smith’s Diamond Field Precision Sharpening System offers an easy way to sharpen all types of knives…… INCLUDING SERRATED. The kit comes with a Coarse Diamond Stone, Fine Diamond Stone, Fine Arkansas Stone, Medium Triangular shaped Arkansas Stone for serrated edges only, Diamond Retractable Sharpener, and Premium Honing Solution.
Tip: If you use a flat, bench type stone (diamond, synthetic, or natural), you can only sharpen the tips of the serration.
